The telescope
can be disassembled and most of it stored in a cube 11" on a side.
The remaining pieces can be put into luggage. Although the bearings are
shown here outside of the cube, they also fit inside. |
Here
the telescope is shown assembled for use. Note that the upper section of
the box has been folded into a triangular base, making it a tripod. This
is one of the features I like the most. The tripod raises the eyepiece
height to a comfortable viewing position while seated. |

of the upper support ring, baffle, spider, secondary, and focuser. Note
that one of the long flat struts also serves as the focuser shelf. |
Note
that the two long struts are oriented at 120°. Not only are two struts
sufficient for such a short focal length, they didn't even need to be
180° apart. A third, short strut supports one of the altitude bearings.
Alternatively, two opposing struts can be used, but a separate focuser
shelf would be needed.

Getting
ready to disassemble the telescope for transport. |
This
figure shows an intermediate step. Note how the upper ring is held in the
"tripod" base that will become the top cover of the box. |
